ハヤテのごとく!/Hayate no Gotoku Manga
Hayate the Combat Butler Chapter 542 Review
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
Nagi is shocked that Hayate hasn’t watched the new Shin Godzilla (Godzilla Resurgence in the U.S.) movie. Since she’s desperate to discuss the movie, she decides to go see Wataru.
At Wataru’s doujinshi shop, Wataru is stocking up on Shin Godzilla stuff. Saki wonders if the movie is really that good. She thinks Godzilla is a kids movie, frustrating Wataru. Nagi bursts in, ranting that the new Godzilla movie isn’t a kids movie. Wataru, upon hearing Nagi speak, agrees with her and the two discuss the movie.
Saki decides to leave the shop with Hayate so she can watch Shin Godzilla and discuss it with Wataru. After she watches it, she doesn’t understand what she saw. It wasn’t her image of the kaiju monster films she recalls.
When she returns to the shop, Nagi and Wataru are still discussing the movie. They are excited when they learn Saki has now watched it. The three of them head to the Tama River, the site of a major scene in the movie. Saki is ready to give up on Wataru as a partner, which causes him to realize Saki didn’t understand the movie. He confesses there were things in the movie he didn’t understand. However, he still liked the movie and he wanted to understand it, know more about it, and be by its side.
Saki realizes Wataru is speaking metaphorically about their relationship. She agrees with him, saying it might take a lifetime to understand. Their hands reach out to each other as Nagi wants to visit the bridge that was destroyed in the movie.
Thoughts/Review:
Har! I want to see Shin Godzilla even more now. Here’s a trailer from the film. See if you can identify which famous anime creator is involved in the making of the movie, just from watching the trailer. 😉
It’s Godzilla!
One element that had me chuckling about the chapter is the desperate need Nagi had to discuss the Shin Godzilla movie with someone who’d watched it. In my younger years, I used to hit a lot of forums and such to discuss movies and TV shows. That was on top of the discussions I’d have with friends at work and other places.
Today, I mostly discuss a movie with my buddies after we leave the theater. Sometimes we’ll be out there for hours and security or the police might slowly cruise by to see if we are up to something. So I laughed when Saki leaves to watch the film because she wants in on Nagi and Wataru’s conversation, only to return and have them STILL discussing the film. 😆
I do plan on picking up the BD when Funimation releases it, even though I’m pretty sure they won’t use Japanese honorifics in the subtitles. 🙄
The Farewell Tour Continues
I know some folks will disagree with me, but I’m pretty sure Hata-sensei is saying farewell to all of the side characters who won’t have a role to play in the final story arc of the manga. We’ve had chapters for Yukiji and Izumi so far. Now, we get one with Saki and Wataru. I know that Wataru has a gem, so he might play a role in the main story. However, I can see Saki being gone until the final cameos when the manga ends.
I like the way Hata-sensei has done the Saki x Wataru romance. It is subtle and sweet. I never bought into the Sister Sonia x Wataru ship. After Wataru gave up on Isumi, it was Saki x Wataru all the way. Saki will be Wataru’s wife-maid for life. 😉
Well, I didn’t need to look at the trailer to know…. The last part of this chapter is sufficient as a hint for those who know the other works of Director-kun haha.
But watching the trailer is a certain proof. The music, the camera angles, the tanks….

Trivia: This director even has a flash anime telling his everyday life based on his wife’s manga. (And I watched it btw)
Still waiting for rebuild4.44…. And man, 3.33 was “Despair: The movie”…. And it even had a kaiju live action short as a opening film, in the likes of Godzilla….
Now on Hayate: Yup, another farewell chapter. I think that the mangaka had planned several plots for the secondary characters, but he will not develop them as he plans to end the manga, so instead he just is making a close to their story in this form.
😀
The tanks were the confirmation. Before that, I’m thinking, “Godzilla could be an angel attacking Neo Tokyo-3.” But when I saw the tanks, I actually laughed ’cause then I knew for sure that the film was borrowing from Evangelion.
You know, after 2.22, I was interested in seeing 3.33. However, as time went on, I found myself not caring. I’ve no interest in watching it now, which is kinda sad. 🙁
You know what? You did well!! I don’t recommend watching 3.33 until 4.44 is available, as it is the typical Anno’s Trolling, and it confuses you even more than Shinji is in the movie. 2.22 was the perfect EVA movie, and NOTHING of the preview at the end is in 3.33.
In fact, I thought that before the 4th movie they were going to make another TV series explaining things between the films…. But 2015 ended and nothing…
Evangelion (and Hideaki Anno himself I think) tends to go in a determined plot structure:
1- Strong Start and Introduction of characters and the world->
2- Action and some comedy (Asuka Strikes!) with zero explanations->
3- Explanation of some things and new and very confusing events, with lots of melodrama->
4- Epic Action Packed Battle Royale with a vague, abrupt, ambiguous and not closing ending.
Of course, everything covered with biblical and religious ambiguities and philosophical dialogues.
If you follow that with each rebuild movie you have 1->2->3 until now….
The end of Evangelion movies are replacing the 4th instalment of this structure in the TV version (as it wasn’t the real ending because of budget problems), so it is an addendum to it.
And nothing is officially established but I think that Rebuild is in fact a sequel of the TV iteration.
Thanks for the tip. Of course, who knows when 4.44 will be released.
This is an ugly Japanese storytelling trait. There are a lot of Japanese authors/writers who seem to think that leaving things vague allows the audience to come up with their own conclusion and not be wrong. Personally, I’m not a fan of that. As writers, they see dangers of angering fans by doing things that are conclusive and goes against what some fans want. I cite the recent uproar over the Bleach ending and hookups. (And I’ve never read the manga and only watched the first episode of the anime.)
I prefer this way of a very nice closures to characters. It doesn’t leave me wondering what happened. Naruto kinda did with the last handful of chapters. Bleach to me did the worst, considering how long the manga was and all the sub-plots and characters, the last chapter was ‘meh’ at the its best, and left me with many questions about many of the characters that didn’t appear after the final battle. More so jumping so many years quickly when some chapters moved soooo slow. At least show Ichigo proposing to Orihime, or any kind of romantic action with those two or for Renji and Rukia as in at least a hug or kiss.
Trailer for Godzilla is of classic form, including the well recognized godzilla sounds, and brings back in my mind images of the older movies. Its more SPX now than miniatures, but it looks like Tokyo is still ground zero and getting at least damaged once again. Toho’s logo with color but looks like its the same. M1 Abrams than M60 Patton tanks, and Huey cobras. When will Tokyo learn tank and aircraft ordnance can’t stop Godzilla… and they need some special new scientific weapon. Makes me wonder what it will be.
Oh I can see that bridge mentioned in the chapter too in the preview!
It makes me wonder if they still use a person in a Godzilla costume tromping over miniature models of buildings.
I see the words of Shin-Godzilla. I know its a Godzilla movie, but somehow its getting messed up with thoughts of Shin-San or ‘Crayon’ or Shinnosuke “Shin” Nohara and his mom in the well known anime series and it pops in my head, more so with a recent episode with Godzilla. ugh … need to get it out of my head ….
Ha!ha! 😀
I agree. If these are the farewell chapters we believe them to be, then they are nice chapters to say goodbye. I do think we’ll see the characters again for a final, cameo farewell, but these stories dedicated to these secondary characters are nice.
If they didn’t learn it when the angels attacked in Evangelion, they aren’t going to learn now. 😉 But yeah, I’m wondering how they’ll stop it.
Heh!heh! Yep. I liked that bit about the chapter and could understand Nagi’s and Wataru’s excitement. They were at the place shown in the movie. There’s a cool aspect to that. Hard to get from American productions unless you live in one of the big American cities that are often featured in films.
I’m pretty sure it is CGI using motion capture. So there is an aspect of “man in the suit” by having a motion capture actor playing the monster. But that’s fairly common these days. Look at Smaug in The Hobbit movies. All motion capture.
I just read this about the creating of Godzilla.
Makes sense.
That reminded me of the Kaijus of Pacific Rim.
Quoting imdb:
“Approximately a hundred Kaijus and a hundred Jaegers were designed, but only a fraction of these appear in the film. Every week the filmmakers held a vote for their favorites.”
“Though the giant monsters were always intended to be computer generated, all of their designs were expanded from the notion that they could be “worn as suits,” like in traditional kaiju films.”
I bet more Kaiju show up in the sequel. I just hope they make better use of the giant mecha.
Good grief. I just saw my prediction come true, then I discovered that a large chunk of my review got blown away. *_*
